For Deborah Boone, opening her fabric consignment shop was a long-standing date with destiny.

Boone opened Our Fabric Stash first as a twice per year pop-up in 2009 before opening a permanent shop in the International District in 2013. She relocated to Pike Place Market just a few days ago, but a close friend planted the seed for the business over a decade ago.

Boone, who holds degrees in economics and accounting, says "I've always had a love for fabrics." The Detroit native met a woman named Cora who would become a close friend and mentor when Boone moved to Olympia in 1990. Cora had a two-car garage filled with sewing equipment and materials, and Boone asked her if she'd teach her how to sew.

"It was the perfect time to learn how to sew," she says. "There was nothing to do in Olympia 25 years ago!"

But rather than teach her step-by-step, Cora simply said, "'Here's the sewing machine, here's a book, now go learn.' Luckily my husband had taken home ec and taught me how to thread the needle," she says with a laugh.

Boone learned the hard way: by doing it wrong. She made garment after garment, showing each to Cora only to have it ripped apart and reconstructed. But after years of practice, she honed her skills.

Boone says the idea for a fabric shop occurred to her in 1994, but a full time job kept her dream at bay. Now that it's finally come to fruition, Boone says it's a way to honor Cora, feed her passions, and reduce her ecological footprint by ensuring perfectly good fabric doesn't go to waste.

Our Fabric Stash sells scraps and other textiles, along with yarn, thread, sewing machines, scrapbooking supplies, and much more, all by consignment. The shop also offers custom sewing, classes and workshops, and alterations.
