Pike Place Market launched a new program last week called "Fresh Bucks" that matches dollar-for-dollar, every dollar of food stamp benefits spent at any of the Market’s farmers markets.

The match will be available from now until the end of October at Pike Place and Express markets around Downtown Seattle.

Shoppers should check in at the Farm Information tent to receive extra bucks. The only requirement is an Electronic Benefits Transfer card ("EBT" card, it holds benefit money like a debit card) to qualify. The program is made possible by a generous grant from the Pike Place Market Foundation and is part of a collaboration with the City of Seattle.

The information tent will be on the corner of Pike Place and Stewart St. from 9 am-5 pm Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Pass on the word to anyone you know who could benefit from Fresh Bucks!

In the first week we reached more food stamp customers and redeemed more EBT dollars than were redeemed the entire summer of 2012 combined. Over $800 of coupons were distributed last week which is enough to buy 400 bunches of kale or 267 pints of strawberries!
