Pike Place Market and Seattle Tilth Win Sustainability Leadership “People’s Choice” Award for Bringing Fresh Produce to Underserved Seattle Communities
Congratulations to the Pike Place Market Farm Team and Seattle Tilth Producers for winning the Sustainability Leadership People’s Choice Award for their work in providing fresh, locally grown farm produce to underserved families at over a dozen Seattle locations in 2013-2014.
Pike Place Market Farm Team’s Farm to Go Bag program launched last summer at Pike Place Market Child Care and Preschool, Garfield and Yesler Community Centers, and the YMCA at the 2100 Building in Rainier Valley.
Parents gave extremely positive feedback about the Farm to Go program said Rachel Kirby, an employee of the Pike Market Child Care and Preschool who works with the families and kids who attend the center. Each week throughout the summer, parents were given the opportunity to purchase tote bags full of seasonal fruits and vegetables for $7.50 to $15 using a sliding scale. Families could also use EBT cards for the purchase.
In addition to providing access to fresh farm produce to kids, families and individuals, Seattle Tilth’s Good Food Bag program and the Market’s Farm to Go supported local farmers by providing additional markets for their seasonal produce.
"With Farm to Go we can bring farm produce to the people,“ said Dana Gould, Food Access Coordinator at Pike Place Market. "The program helps eliminate so many barriers to fresh food and as a result, families and kids eat more fruits and vegetables."
